Public Meetings Scheduled in January for Coggon Solar Application

The public will have an opportunity to give their opinions about the Coggon Solar LLC Utility-Scale solar application.

Earlier this year, Central Iowa Power Cooperative announced plans to build a large solar farm on private land near Coggon. The farm will provide 100 more megawatts of power to CIPCO members. The project is also expected to contribute several million dollars in property tax revenue to Linn County over the life of the generating facility and is projected to create 350 construction jobs at its peak, many of which will be from local labor.

All utility-scale solar projects in Linn County require an application to rezone the area to be used for the solar installation to Renewable Energy Overlay Zoning District. The rezoning application must undergo a review by the Technical Review Committee, the Planning & Zoning Commission and three readings by the Board of Supervisors. The committee and commission met in November – so the Board of Supervisors meetings are the next and final step in the review process.

The three public meetings have been scheduled for January, which residents can attend virtually or in-person. The meetings will be held Monday, January 10th, Thursday, January 13th and Tuesday, January 18th – all starting at 6 pm at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Central City.

You can review the application documents submitted by Coggon Solar LLC on the Linn County’s website at LinnCountyIowa.gov/SolarFarm.
