Saturday was the first weekend of wrestling tournaments in the new year, and here is a look at how our area teams did.
In Van Horne: West Delaware won the 16 team Bobcat Jerry Eckenrod Invitational hosted by Benton Community. The Hawks had five wrestlers in the finals and one champion as Wyatt Voelker scored a 20-5 technical fall over 4th ranked in class 3A Tanner Spyksma of Waukee Northwest to win the 195 pound bracket, leading the Hawks to 224 1/2 points which was 43 1/2 points better than top ranked in class 1A Don Bosco. Independence finished in 8th place as they were led by Isaiah Weber who made it to the finals but had to injury default to Cooper Sanders of Vinton-Shellsburg in the championship match. North Linn had just three wrestlers competing and finished in 14th place, as they were led by Cael Bridgewater who won the 138 pound title with a 6-4 win over Brent Yonkovic of West Delaware in the finals. In Delhi: Beckman won the Farr Jebens Invitational which was hosted by Maquoketa Valley as the Blazers totaled 187 points which was just 5 1/2 points better than 2nd place Notre Dame, Burlington. The Blazers had four wrestlers in the finals and came away with one champion in Nick Schmidt who won the 126 pound title with a 3-0 decision over Andrew Heins of MFL MarMac. Lane German at 113 pounds and Louis Hamlett at 220 pounds both won titles to lead Starmont to a 5th place finish. German recorded a fall over Shawn Brunsman of Beckman in the finals, while Hamlett defeated Brady Davis of Maquoketa Valley 4-2. Davis was lone finalist for the Wildcats who finished just five points behind the Stars in 6th place. East Buchanan finished in 7th place and were led by heavyweight Cody Fox who scored an 11-3 major decision over Jason Koopmann of Beckman in the finals. Western Dubuque’s JV finished in 9th place, while Anamosa’s Easton Wheeler won 7-6 over Bryce Radloff of MFL MarMac to win the 138 pound bracket to lead the Blue Raiders to a 10th place finish. In Elkader: Ed-Co finished in 9th place at the Central Invitational hosted by Central Elkader. The Vikings were led by Dawson Bergan who went 3-0 with two falls to win the 120 pound title. Dubuque Senior won the team title over 2nd place Waterloo West. For complete results click HERE.
In Marion: Western Dubuque finished 2nd at the Linn-Mar Duals as the Bobcats went 3-1 on the day. Their wins came over Clinton 76-6, Xavier 60-22, and Marion 57-16. The only Bobcat loss came in the championship dual to Linn-Mar who downed the Bobcats 51-24. For complete results click HERE.
In Brooklyn: Monticello finished in 5th place at the Corky Stuart Invitational hosted by BGM. The Panthers had three finalists with Ian Taylor winning the heavyweight title with a 4-1 win in overtime over Dakota Boline of Wapello in the championship match. The Independence JV had one champion in Kale Weiland who won the 120 pound title, as he defeated Ayden Nicklaus of Davenport West in the finals to lead the Mustangs to a 4th place finish. In Riverside: Cascade finished 10th at the Gary Curtis Invitational hosted by Highland High School. The Cougars had two finalists with one champion as Brock Morris won the 106 title with a fall over Kale McQuillen of Wilton in the championship match. Alburnett was the tournament champions.
