HS Wrestling: Saturday 1-22 Recap

Saturday was the last weekend of wrestling tournaments before conference tournaments next weekend, and here’s a rundown of how area teams did.
In Coralville: There was big news at this year’s IWCOA Girls State Wrestling Championships with the announcement that the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union will sanction girls wrestling starting in the 2022-2023 season. It will be the organizations 11th sports and the 34th state to sanction the sport. For the official press release click HERE.
As for the tournament the KMCH listening area was represented well at this year’s state meet. Anamosa had two place winners as Addy Appelhans won the 125-silver bracket while Ava Scranton finished 6th at 125. East Buchanan finished in 14th place as a team as they had three place winners in Destiny Krum who placed 4th at 120, Keeley Kehrli who was 6th at 155, and Alyson Krum who finished in 5th place at 220. Western Dubuque’s Josie Jecklin finished 8th at 155, and Rachel Eddy of Independence took bronze at 190. For complete results click HERE.
In Urbana: West Delaware went 4-0 at the CP-U Duals at Center Point-Urbana High School. The Hawks defeated Decorah 69-9, Oelwein 83-0, CP-U 70-9, and Vinton-Shellsburg 54-21. For complete results click HERE.
In Winthrop: East Buchanan went 1-4 in their own Steinkamp Duals on Saturday. The Buccaneers defeated Ed-Co 48-12 and fell to New London 36-27, Jesup 45-36, Sumner-Fredericksburg 54-18, and Waterloo West 42-30. Ed-Co went 0-5 in the duals at they lost to New London 44-6, Jesup 51-15, Waterloo West 60-24, and Sumner-Fredericksburg 54-24. For results of East Buchanan Duals click HERE. In Denver: Beckman finished in 3rd place at the Denver Duals as the Blazers went 3-1 on the day. In their bracket they defeated Garner Hayfield 54-18, Waukon 54-21 and fell to Crestwood 47-30, before defeating New Hampton/Turkey Valley 43-33 in the 3rd place dual. For complete results click HERE.
In Wyoming: Monticello finished in 3rd place at the John Byers Invitational at Midland High School. The Panthers had three wrestlers finish as runner-up in Jonah Luensman, Mark Sunlin, and Kale Hansen. Maquoketa Valley finished in 7th place as a team as they were led by Michael Schaul at 152 pounds and Brady Davis at 220 pounds who both won individual titles for the Wildcats. In Anamosa: Starmont finished 2nd at the Denny Christiansen Invitational hosted by Anamosa. The Stars finished 26 points behind Cedar Rapids Washington as they finished with four champions in Lane German, Avery Vaske, Jacob Goedken, and Louis Hamlett. Anamosa finished in 4th place with two champions in Austin Scranton and Cole Sigler. For complete results click HERE.
In Ankeny: Independence went 3-2 at the Dave Ewing Duals hosted by Ankeny High School. The Mustangs had victories over Spencer 57-14, Mason City 62-15, and Sioux City North 82-0. Their only two losses on the day came to the tournament champion Ankeny 36-33 and Bondurant-Farrar 38-29. For complete results click HERE.
In Alburnett: Cascade finished 7th at the Alburnett Invite on Saturday as the Cougars were led by Brock Morris who finished as the runner-up at 106 pounds. Western Dubuque’s JV team finished in 6th place and were led by heavyweight Nathan Gill who went 3-0 on his way to an individual title. For complete results click HERE.
In Greene: North Linn finished in 8th place at the Doug Trees Bearcat Invitational host by North Butler High School as the Lynx were led by Blaine Baumgartner who won the title at 132 pounds. For complete results click HERE.
In Williamsburg: Western Dubuque won the Williamsburg Raider Invitational as they were 16 1/2 points better than 2nd place Williamsburg. The Bobcats had six individual champions as they were Drew Burds, Logan Massey, Greyson Gardner, Evan Surface, Dakota Hoffman, and Brody Steger. For complete results click HERE.
