Mary Ellen Rathe – Lamont

Mary Ellen Rathe, 74, of Lamont, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at her home. She was born on July 31, 1947, in her home in Sumner, the daughter of Arnold and Dorothy (Tegtmeier) Westendorf.  Mary was baptized August 17, 1947 by Rev. E. A. Hanff at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli and confirmed April 16, 1962 at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli by Rev. Arnold Thalacker. Her confirmation verse was Luke 10:42. Mary graduated in 1965 from Tripoli High School.

On August 29, 1965, Mary was united in marriage to Dallas Lee Rathe at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli by Rev. Arnold Thalacker and Rev. Arnold Aschbrenner. Six children were born to this union. Mary worked on the family farm helping with all of the daily operations.  She also prepared all of the wonderful meals. She was led by the Spirit to take care of others.

Mary was a founding member of the Mission in Christ Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially all of her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Dallas Rathe; her children, Todd (Robyn) Rathe of Mequon, Wisconsin, Tim (Carol) Rathe of Lamont, Dolores Hughes of Marshall, Arkansas, and Ryan (Clancy) Rathe of Prescott Valley, Arizona; her 14 grandchildren, Lilly Rathe, Keaton Rathe, Rebekah Rathe, Connor Rathe, Noah Rathe, Autumn Rathe, Sawyer Rathe, Brett Zierath, Blake Zierath, Maranda (John) Cook, Trent Hughes, Summer Hughes, Holly (Jannie) House and Irene Rathe; her four great-grandchildren, Oakley Lemmons, Parker Lemmons, Caden Cook and Hudson Cook; her brother, Gayl (Laura) Westendorf of California; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael(Sharon) Rathe of Florida, Linda (Carl) Schwanbeck of Minnesota, Steve (Gayl) Rathe of Readlyn,  and Rick (Sandy) Rathe of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her two sons, Paul and Trent Rathe; and her son-in-law, Steve Hughes.

Funeral Service:   11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Mission in Christ Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point, with Reverend Gary Burkhalter officiating.

Visitation:  9:00 to 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Mission in Christ Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point, Iowa.

Interment:  Grace Lutheran Church Cemetery – Rural Tripoli, Iowa
