Leland Eugene Reiss – Ryan

Leland Eugene Reiss, 90, of Ryan, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at his home. He was born on October 14, 1931, in Ryan, the son of Louis and Lorena (Heiberger) Reiss. He was raised and educated in the Ryan area, graduating from St. John Catholic High School in Ryan in 1949. He graduated in the top ten of his class of ten. Leland served honorably in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1955.

On August 8, 1959, Leland was united in marriage to Waunetta O’Leary at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. Five children were born to this union.  The couple resided in Ryan. Leland was co-owner of Keegan and Reiss Insurance in Ryan for many years.  He also worked as a crop insurance adjuster. Leland was a hard-working man.

Leland was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was a member of the Ryan American Legion Post #692 for over 60 years. Leland enjoyed playing Pinochle and refinishing furniture. He loved his family and spending time with them.

Survivors include his five children, David Reiss of Manchester, Sherri (Steve) Vorwald of Manchester, Mary (Dave) Pearson of Kirksville, Missouri, Debbie (Al) Saunders of Ryan, and Dan (Chris) Reiss of Ryan; 16 grandchildren, Jon (LeeAnn) Reiss, Jenni (Rusty) Aldrich, Jordan (Laura) Reiss, Josh (Stacy) Vorwald, Cody (Lacey) Vorwald, Kaitlyn (Ryan) Philippson, Jamae Miller, Michael (Michaela) Saunders, Abby (Jeremy) Hartman, Emma (Ryan) Leuchs, Britta Saunders, Maggie Saunders, Ellen (Brendan) Dettmer, Sarah (fiancé, Justin Fenske) Reiss, Laura Reiss, and Grace Reiss; 33 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lois Byrne of Marion; a brother-in-law, Jerry (MaryPat) O’Leary of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.

Leland was preceded in death by his wife, Waunetta Reiss; his parents; his parents-in-law, Frank and Gertrude O’Leary; a daughter-in-law, Kendy Reiss; one brother, Leo (Rosella) Reiss; two sisters, June Reiss in infancy and Lorraine (Chuck) Kennedy; and a brother-in-law, Dan Byrne.

The family would like to thank the Regional Medical Center Home Health Care and Cedar Valley Hospice staff for all of the wonderful care given to dad.

Mass of Christian Burial:  10:30 a.m., Monday, February 7, 2022 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan, Iowa, with Reverend Gabriel Anderson presiding.

Visitation: 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa.

Interment with Military Rites:  Calvary Cemetery – Ryan, Iowa
