Carol Ann Morarend – Manchester

Carol Ann Morarend, 72, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Monday, February, 21, 2022, at her home in Manchester. She was born on December 28, 1949, in Oelwein, the daughter of Francis and Berniece (Ries) Gassman of rural Strawberry Point. She was raised and educated in the Edgewood area and graduated from Ed-Co High School in 1968, where she was honored to have been chosen as FFA Chapter Sweetheart and Homecoming Queen. Carol also attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.
On November 8, 1969, Carol was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Tom Morarend in San Francisco, California. After their marriage they lived on the family farm near Colesburg before moving to Manchester. Carol worked at several local businesses including, Hilton Homes in Guttenberg; Galaxy Homes in Dyersville; and the Manchester Press. She finished her career as the friendly face at the Welcome Desk of Regional Family Health, Manchester.
Carol was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester, helping as greeter, usher, and communion server. Carol and Tom enjoyed traveling, with some of their favorite places being Florida, California, Okinawa and Alaska. Each winter they would spend several months in Florida to be close to their son Jason and his family. Carol enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, as well as working outside, crafting and enjoying chocolate. She was just as good at shingling a roof and siding a house as she was at crafting. Carol enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and was so proud of her granddaughters.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Tom Morarend; her two sons, Commander Jason (Christina) Morarend of Pensacola, Florida, and Jesse Morarend of Edgewood; two grandchildren, Morgan (Justin) Segarra and Taylor Morarend; three siblings, Dianne Williams of Manchester, Dale (Deb) Gassman of Manchester, and Lynn (Jim) Harkin of Ankeny; her sister-in-law, Pat (Bob) Jones and several nieces and nephews.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Veryl and Phyllis Morarend; her brother-in-law, Francis Williams; nephew, Mark Williams; and niece, Stacie Williams.

Funeral: 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 25, 2022, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 313 East Fayette Street, Manchester, Iowa with Reverend Tony D. Ede officiating.
Visitation: 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa. Friends may also call 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 25, 2022 at the church.
