The ag community gathered in Manchester on Thursday for the Manchester Chamber’s 39th Annual Ag Luncheon.
Dr. David Kohl was back this year as the keynote speaker – he’s Professor Emeritus in Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech. Dr. Kohl has been a crowd favorite over the years with his energetic presentation, sharing his insights into agricultural trends. And he has this message for farmers:
FFA students from West Delaware, Maquoketa Valley, Ed-Co and Beckman were at the Ag Luncheon too. They had an opportunity to visit with businesses in the morning during the FFA Career Fair and then listened to Dr. Kohl speak. Maquoketa Valley FFA student Alia Domeyer:
The Chamber also presented three special awards – the Friend of Ag Award for 2020, 2021 and 2022 (since the event wasn’t held the past two years because of COVID).
Dan Wheeler was named the 2021 Friend of Ag Award recipient. Wheeler recently sold Dan’s Locker in Earlville after 38 years in business.
Jennifer Zumbach was named the 2020 Friend of Ag Award recipient for her work as a coach with the Delaware County Dairy Quiz Bowl Teams – under her guidance, Delaware County has had at least one state champion team every year since 2007. Zumbach says she’s so appreciative they wanted to honor her in that way.
But the final award of the day touched her even more – as the Manchester Chamber honored her dad, David Kunde, with the 2022 Friend of Ag Award. David passed away in January. For nearly five decades, he farmed with his family south of Manchester, where a herd of Jerseys and the dairy industry became his lifetime business and passion. David had a huge impact on the agriculture community – serving on numerous boards, including the Delaware County Dairy Council, Iowa State Dairy Association and Midwest Dairy Association; coaching Delaware County Dairy Quiz Bowl Teams; serving 55 years as a 4-H leader of the Milo Livestock 4-H Club; and starting the Delaware County 4-H Foodstand more than 40 years ago. Zumbach, along with her mom and siblings, accepted the award on her dad’s behalf.
In next week’s Ag Informer segments, KMCH Farm Director Justin Roberts will be visiting with some of the FFA students who attended today’s Ag Luncheon, as well as the royalty representing the Delaware County Pork Producers, Dairy Promoters and Cattlemen who were on hand today helping serve the Ag Luncheon guests.
