Pikes Peak State Park Undergoing Major Overhaul

Pikes Peak State Park will undergo a major overhaul to improve the campground and main parking lot later this month.

The DNR says Pikes Peak is one of their premier destination parks in Iowa, sitting 500 feet above the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers just three miles south of McGregor.

Improvements will include upgrading the campground’s electrical system and adding space between the camp pads and some pull-through campsites. Full hook-up campsites will be added, additional water hydrants will be placed throughout the campground and there will be two dump stations. The overall number of campsites will stay about the same.

While work in Pikes Peak State Park is underway, the main entrance to the park will be closed. Park Manager Matt Tschirgi says they’ll reopen the parking lot as soon as possible, which will give visitors easy access to the overlook.

Weather-permitting, the park should be open for the busy fall leaf-looking season later this year.
