Dorothy Mae (Cassutt) Allen – McKinney, TX; formerly of Manchester

Dorothy Mae (Cassutt) Allen, age 90, of McKinney, Texas, formerly of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022. She was born in Elkader on August 2, 1931, to Leo and Anastasia (Downey) Cassutt. Dorothy was raised and educated in Elkader, graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in 1949. While in school, she was involved in basketball, musicals, and writing for the school newspaper. Dorothy worked at a local pharmacy through high school and college, saving money so she could attend college. She graduated in 1951 with a teaching degree from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. Her first teaching jobs were in Aurora and Garnavillo.

On August 6, 1955, Dorothy was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Allen in Elkader.  They resided in Manchester for 62 years, where they raised their two daughters. Dorothy taught the first years of their marriage in Oneida and then at West Delaware for 29 years.

After 37 years of teaching, she retired in 1989. During their retirement, Dorothy and Bob enjoyed wintering in California and Arizona for over 20 years. In 2017, they moved to McKinney, Texas, to be closer to family.

Dorothy was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, where she was involved in Catholic Daughters of America. She loved golfing and travel, but mostly enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her two daughters, Julie (John) Becker of Alto, Michigan, and Jean (Bob) Possehl of McKinney, Texas; four grandchildren, Joe (Hang) Becker, Sam (Erica) Becker, Ellen (Jake) Whitehurst, and Scott Possehl; three great-granddaughters, Hannah, Olivia, and Claire Becker; three great-grandsons, Noah and Rhett Whitehurst and Lucas Becker; one sister, Jean Ann Hinds of Mankato, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, Lynn (Rosemary) Allen of Florissant, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Marsha (Richard) Long of Solon;  and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob; and her siblings, Joseph Patrick Cassutt, Florian (Joyce) Cassutt, Ray (Joanne) Cassutt, Jim Cassutt, and Catherine (John) Degenford.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary Catholic School.

Memorial Mass: 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2022, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa, with Reverend Gabriel Anderson officiating.

Visitation:  9:00 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2022, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa.

Inurnment:  St. Mary Catholic Cemetery – Manchester, Iowa
