Trial Delayed for Man Charged with Shooting Deputy in Coggon

Trial has been delayed for the man charged with shooting a deputy in Coggon last year.

Authorities say Stanley Donahue of Chicago shot Linn County Deputy Will Halverson during an attempted robbery at the Casey’s General Store along Highway 13 last June. Donahue then fled the scene, crashing his vehicle in Coggon while being pursued by another deputy and then fleeing on foot. He was apprehended the next day after he was spotted walking down Highway 13.

Deputy Halverson suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Donahue faces numerous charges, including attempted murder, robbery and disarming a peace officer.

New court documents show the defense and prosecution have agreed to delay the trial – that’s because the lead defense counsel will be leaving the Johnson County Public Defender’s Office before the trial begins and they’ll need to get a new attorney.

Donahue’s trial was set for July, but it’s now been delayed until further notice.
