Linn County Plans Several Public Meetings to Review Duane Arnold Solar Project

Linn County will be holding several public meetings later this summer to review the Duane Arnold solar project.

It’s the first project NextEra Energy Resources will be developing in the state of Iowa. It will be done in two phases, with the project scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2024. The project will be located near Palo, with phase two including a 75-megawatt four-hour battery energy storage facility. Once finished, the solar project will be capable of powering up to 40,000 homes, with the IPL-Alliant purchasing the project and distributing the energy across the grid.

All utility-scale solar applicants in Linn County must undergo a review by the Technical Review Committee, the Planning & Zoning Commission and three readings by the County Board of Supervisors.

The P&Z meeting is scheduled for July 28th, with public comments time-limited. The County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the project’s application on August 22nd, with the second and third considerations to follow on August 24th and 29th. All meetings are scheduled for 6 pm at the Palo Community Center.
