Reactions to U.S. Supreme Court’s Ruling on Overturning Roe vs. Wade

The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years — a decision by its conservative majority to overturn the court’s landmark abortion cases.

Friday’s outcome overturning Roe v. Wade is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. The decision was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by three appointees of former President Donald Trump.

Iowa leaders in both parties are reacting to Friday’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on abortion.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds released a statement Friday calling the ruling one of the Supreme Court’s greatest moments. Reynolds also says, “The fight for life is not over. As Governor, I won’t rest until every unborn Iowan is protected and respected.”

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Ross Wilburn’s statement calls the ruling “a dark day for freedom in our nation as we reckon with the consequences of a 50-years-long vendetta against the freedoms protected by Roe v. Wade.” It goes on to say, “Iowa Democrats will continue to fight for every Iowan’s right to decide for themselves if, when, and with whom they want to have a family.”

KMCH reached out to the Delaware County Republican and Democratic parties for statements on today’s Roe vs Wade decision as well.

Delaware County Republican Chair Roger Helmrichs:

We have not received a response yet from the Delaware County Democrats.
