Buchanan County Fair Kicks Off with Storms, Races Cancelled Tonight

It’s Buchanan County Fair week – and the fair got off to an exciting start on Tuesday night as severe storms rolled through the area.

Winds estimated at 70 miles per hour moved through Independence, where the fairgrounds are located, with a funnel cloud also spotted – causing the National Weather Service to issue a Tornado Warning.

But Fair Manager Julie Althaus says the fairgrounds escaped the storms with just minor damage.

But the heavy rains have led to the cancellation of tonight’s races.

Althaus says they’ve got a great fair in store for you this year, including a concert with country star Billy Currington on Friday night.

The Buchanan County Fair runs through Saturday, with admission five dollars.
