Linn County Approves Rezoning for Solar Farm Near Palo

A solar project near Palo is one step closer to becoming a reality.

The Linn County Board of Supervisors voted 2 to 1 on Tuesday night to rezone land along Palo Marsh Road north of town near the former Duane Arnold nuclear power plant.

The zoning changes will allow for construction of a large-scale solar farm around the decommissioned power plant.

NextEra Energy has proposed the solar farm, which would cover over 11-hundred acres, as well as a battery storage facility.

According to KCRG, most of the people speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting were in opposition to the project, with concerns that the solar farm would stand in the way of the city’s growth and negatively impact property.

This is the second solar project in the works in Linn County. Earlier this year, the Supervisors approved rezoning over six hundred acres of farmland into a solar farm near Coggon – though a family who lives nearby is challenging that decision in court.
