Wallace Delano Hawker- Manchester

Wallace Delano Hawker, 89, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. He was born on February 28, 1933, on the home farm east of Ryan, the son of Carl and Hazel (Tudor) Hawker. Wallace attended school in Manchester. Wallace served honorably as part of the infantry in the United States Army during the Korean War. He later was part of the military police and earned the rank of sergeant.

On June 14, 1959, Wallace was united in marriage to Mary Lou Schwertfeger at Evangelical Reform Church in rural Marengo. Three children were born to this union. Wallace worked for Hobie Evans, Baxter and Dvorack, and owned Hawkers Auto Repair. Wallace then worked at Exide, retiring in 1999. He was a 50th degree Mason and a member of the Manchester Fire Department. Wallace served on the Delaware County Fair Board and was a longtime member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Wallace was an avid fisherman. He loved to read westerns. Wallace and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling all over the United States in their R.V. He loved taking his grandchildren fishing, boating, and camping. Wallace will be sadly missed by his loving family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Lou Hawker of Manchester; two sons, Wallace Greg (Betsy) Hawker and David (Amanda) Hawker, all of Manchester; one daughter, Tricia (Shawn) Foster of Manchester; eight grandchildren, Stephanie, Joshua, Gregory, Sarah, Kara, Kamille, Dylan, and Derik; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Marlene Mays Swanson; sister-in-law, Marcia Hawker; and several nieces and nephews.

Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Willard Hawker; brother-in-law, Donald Mays; and many aunts and uncles.

Visitation: 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Friends may also call from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday.

Interment: Oakland Cemetery – Manchester, Iowa
