Child Dies in Jones County House Fire

A child died in a house fire in Jones County early Friday morning.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office says a 911 call came in around 4:15 am for a house fire at 205 Summit Street in Onslow in the eastern part of the county.

One adult and five children were in the home when the fire broke out, with a child trapped in an upstairs bedroom. Fire departments from Wyoming, Monticello, Oxford Junction and Olin all responded and tried multiple times to reach the child inside, but weren’t able to due to the intensity of the heat and flames on both floors of the home.

The child has been identified as a student of the Midland School District.

The adult and the other four children were transported to Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa with heat- and smoke-related injuries. One of those children were later transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where their condition was not known on Friday afternoon. The other four people have since been released from the hospital.

The names of those involved are not being released at this time.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation into the cause of the fire. The preliminary investigation shows the fire was accidental and started in the kitchen area.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office thanks everyone who provided aid to emergency responders during this tragedy.
