Beckman Catholic Voting for IHSAA’s Socio-Economic Proposal
Beckman Catholic High School in Dyersville is joining many other Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, voting in favor of the IHSAA’s proposal to allow a socio-economic adjustment to each school’s BEDS enrollment for classification purposes.
The Iowa Boys High School Athletic Association has a vote out right now to member schools on whether or not to change the football classifications to include a provision for schools to reduce their enrollment based on their free and reduced lunch count. The correlation is that schools with higher free and reduced lunch count have a lower participation rate in activities, which affects the competitiveness of the teams and schools.
Most of the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese are saying they agree with that – but they believe that if they’re talking about that for athletics, they should also be talking about it for education purposes too.
Beckman Catholic Principal Marcel Kielkucki:
Voting opened for schools late last week and will close on Thursday. If approved, it would go to the Iowa State Board of Education for their approval as well.
