Iowa State Patrol Recommends No Travel During Blizzard

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Jon Stickney of Manchester says they are highly recommending that people do not venture out at least until the brunt of the storm passes, hopefully by Sunday.

Stickney says if you need to travel, make sure your vehicle is stocked with survival gear, blankets, water, charged cell phones, jumper cables and food in case you become stranded. He says the Iowa State Patrol will do everything they can to rescue those who get stranded, but it may take time depending on the conditions.

Fellow State Trooper Paul Gardner said by mid-day Thursday, at least 140 motorists had gotten some type of assistance from a trooper since the winter storm started moving in Wednesday afternoon.

Gardner says they’ve seen some calls for service of semis that are jelling up, so they’re responding to those calls to get drivers someplace warm, such as a truck stop. Several accidents and stalled vehicles blocked areas of I-80 on Thursday.
