Independence Man Sentenced for False Statement During Firearm Purchase

An Independence man has been sentenced for making a false statement while purchasing a firearm from an Independence hardware store last year.

47-year old Dallas Shannon was sentenced in Cedar Rapids on Monday to five years of supervised release. He had pleaded guilty to making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm in September.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Shannon admitted during his guilty plea that on or about February 14th, he knowingly made a false representation of an ATF Form 447, stating that he was not an unlawful user of marijuana.

Along with his term of supervised release, Shannon is now prohibited from possessing firearms.

The case was investigated by the Independence Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
