Area Students Experience Careers in Skilled Trades at NICC Edgewood Event

Schools and businesses from across the area were in Edgewood on Tuesday as NICC hosted its first-ever High Demand Skilled Trades Event.

That’s Gena Gesing, who serves as the manager of Career and Work-Based Learning with Northeast Iowa Community College.

Fehr Graham was among the fifteen businesses and industries attending. Adam Recker works for the company as a land surveyor and says it was a great opportunity to connect with the kids.

Maquoketa Valley was among the schools taking advantage of what the event had to offer. Industrial Arts teacher Kurt Palmer brought ten of his students to check it out.

Maquoketa Valley senior Landin Frasher says they got hands-on experience with several industries by mid-morning.

Frasher, who says he’s thinking about attending Kirkwood after graduation for an apprenticeship in plumbing, says he’s glad NICC decided to host an event like this.

His teacher agrees.

And NICC says the day seemed to be a success.

Gesing says they’re hoping to make the NICC High Demand Skilled Trades Event an annual event.
