Lawrence “Larry” Henry Sperfslage- Strawberry Point

Lawrence “Larry” Henry Sperfslage passed away Feb. 5, 2023, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, with family by his side. He was born on May 16, 1941, in Earlville, Iowa, to Frank and Magdaline Sperfslage. He attended school in Earlville and began working on farms in the area at a young age.

He served in the Navy before returning home to be united in marriage to Alice Gudenkauf of Ryan, Iowa, on June 20, 1961. To this union were born five children, Scott Sperfslage of Wadena, Ron (Kim) Sperfslage of Manchester, Mark (Dianne) Sperfslage of Ridgeway, Wis., Cindy (Chris) Gaffney of Lamont and Kevin (Ellen) Sperfslage of Otley.

He was very proud of his family and accomplishments. He loved to restore older cars and tractors. His ’59 Chevy Impala and Oliver 2150 were the highlights of his hobby. He loved hunting many types of game. His trophy collection is displayed at Meyer Hardware in Strawberry Point. He always looked forward to deer season and hunting with family and friends.

He farmed in the Lamont and Winthrop areas for 20 years, then pursued a career in aviation in the ’80s. Getting his A & P license, he worked many places in the U.S. He continued to get his DAR license, working as an independent contractor traveling the world.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years; five siblings, Francois, Eugene, Viola, Norbert and Tom; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings, Leroy, Richard, Harold, James and Dorothy Ann.

Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Strawberry Point and 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at St. Mary’s with burial at St. Albert Cemetery, Lamont, Iowa.
