Phillips Named Next Independence School District Superintendent

The Independence Community School District has named their next superintendent.

Cynthia Phillips was announced to the position on Thursday morning. Phillips is currently the executive director of high school education in the Cedar Rapids Community School District and she has previously served as principal of North Polk High School.

The School Board has announced their three finalists earlier this month. The other two finalists included Ben Petty, the superintendent of the BCLUW Community School District, and Erik Smith, the shared superintendent of the AGWSR and Gladbrook-Reinbeck Community School Districts.

Eighteen candidates applied for the Independence superintendent position.

Phillips will replace current superintendent, Russell Reiter. She’ll begin leading the Independence Community School District on July 1st.
