Trash Fire Spreads to Field in Independence Area

An out of control trash fire spread to a field in the Independence area on Wednesday afternoon.

The Independence Fire Department says they were called out to the 1700 block of Otterville Boulevard during the noon hour.

Firefighters say a large pile of garbage that was set on fire had spread to a nearby field area. Several fires were found in a brush area. Crews had to battle the gusting winds to contain the fire. They were on the scene for about two hours.

Outdoor burning should be avoided at this time, with all of eastern Iowa under a Red Flag Warning through 8 pm Thursday.
