Burning Trash Led to Amish Store Fire Near Delhi

Fire officials say burning trash led to a fire at a business near Delhi on Thursday.

A fire broke out at the Amish hardware store southwest of Delhi shortly before 10 am.

Fire departments from Delhi, Hopkinton, Ryan, Manchester, Delaware and Earlville responded to the scene at 2556 220th Avenue.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office closed 220th Avenue due to fire equipment being parked on the roadway, with crews using an excavator to gain access to the fire-damaged portion of the building.

Delhi Fire Chief Joe Vorwald says the business was burning trash behind the hardware store when embers flew under the building. The store sustained smoke damage throughout the building. The back wall and north wall also sustained extensive damage.

No one was injured.
