Two people were involved in a near drowning in the Independence area on Saturday.
The Independence Fire Department says firefighters were dispatched around 4:30 pm to 3 Elms River Access. On the scene, crews found two females on the bank downriver from the boat ramp. Bystanders reported one female began struggling to swim when her friend was able to rescue her and drag her to land.
Buchanan County Sheriff’s deputies were on the riverbank assessing the swimmers when firefighters launched their boat. Crews were able to rescue both swimmers from the bank and return them to the boat dock.
One of the swimmers was transported to the hospital.
