New Iowa Dairy Princess Crowned

Iowa has a new Dairy Princess.

19-year old Ashley Elsbernd of Calmar, representing Winneshiek County, won the crown during a ceremony at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Wednesday night.

Elizabeth Fossum of Waterville, representing Allamakee County, was named Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate and will share the duties with the princess.

They were among six candidates competing for the Iowa Dairy Princess title, with the judging held Tuesday and Wednesday in Ankeny. The other candidates included Sydney Demmer of Delaware County, Adrianna Shepard representing Dubuque County, Haily Backer representing Butler County and Taylor Sparrgrove-Nelson representing Milking Shorthorn Breed.

The winners were selected based on an application, answers to essay questions, interview and public speaking skills, professionalism, and ability to advocate for dairy farmers.

The outgoing 2022-23 royalty is Iowa Dairy Princess Naomi Scott of Westgate and Alternate Emily Manweiler of Sumner. Their reigns will be completed at the end of the month, with new royalty beginning their duties on September 1st.
