The General Store Pub Closing in Stone City

A popular Jones County restaurant and bar has announced they’ll be closing.
The General Store Pub in Stone City will close its doors on November 1st.Â
The historic eatery, which sits along the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, was built in 1897 and is immortalized in Grant Wood’s famous “Stone City†painting. It was once a general store, converted into a restaurant and bar.
The General Store has been open since 2008 – and while this has been their best summer since COVID, staffing continues to be a struggle.Â
In a Facebook post on Sunday night, owner Tad Larson announced they would be transitioning to offer private events, such as weddings and holiday or corporate parties. The building is not for sale at the present time.
The General Store Pub thanks their staff and customers for their support over the years and looks forward to seeing everyone over the next couple months.
