Investigation Suggesting Random Act of Violence

The following is an update to the developing story today in Monticello and Hopkinton.

Latest Update 6:42 pm

Authorities say the man injured in today’s shooting in Monticello has died.

The Monticello Police Department released an update tonight. Police say the victim, 48-year old Aaron McAtee of Monticello, who was an employee of Fareway, had been outside of the Monticello Fareway store near the loading dock on Tuesday morning when he was shot. Police say it appears to have been a random act of violence.

McAtee was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he succumbed to his injuries.

During the course of the investigation, 38-year old Nathan Russell of East Dubuque, Illinois, was identified as a person of interest. Area law enforcement began an active search for Russell, who was later located in Hopkinton by a Delaware County deputy. While attempting to take Russell into custody, Russell failed to comply with the deputy’s directions. The deputy discharged his firearm in an attempt to detail Russell.

Russell was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with gunshot injuries.

The Delaware County deputy has been placed on critical incident leave pending the continued investigation.

No active threat to the public is anticipated as a continued result of this incident.

The investigation remains ongoing in partnership with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Jones County Sheriff’s Office and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. The incidents are being reviewed by the Jones County Attorney’s Office and Delaware County Attorney’s Office.
