Mary Virginia “Ginger” Burke, formerly of Coggon

Mary Virginia “Ginger” Burke, 93, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Coggon, passed away on Friday,
December 1, 2023, at The Villages in Marion. She was born on November 21, 1930, in Grinnell, the
daughter of Charles and Marguerite (Jones) Lawler. Ginger was raised and educated in the Parnell area and
was a graduate of Parnell High School. Ginger graduated from Ottumwa Heights College in 1950 earning
her teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was in Walford, where she met her future husband at a dance.

On January 14, 1952, Ginger was united in marriage to William Dorance Burke in Parnell. Four children
were born to this union. Together they farmed and resided in the Coggon area. She began her teaching
career in the Walker School District. Ginger earned her BA in Education from Upper Iowa College in 1976.
She was a dedicated teacher in the North Linn School District and retired after 31 years. The couple retired
in 1990.

Ginger was a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monti. Over the years she and Bill enjoyed
attending dances in the area. Ginger enjoyed reading and loved ice cream. Above all else, she loved her
family and spending time with them.

Ginger was a gentle soul, kindhearted, generous in love and devout to God. She was the true meaning of a
loving mother and devoted wife. She will be missed by all of those who were blessed to have known her.

Survivors include her four children, Hank (Jane) Burke of San Clemente, California, Mick (Beverly) Burke of
Walker, Janet Weekly of Walker, and Annette (Jerry) Slattery of Winthrop; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-
grandchildren; one sister, Janet (Jerry) Bush of Iowa City; and several nieces and nephews.

Ginger was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill in 2018; sister, Frances (Abel) Furmento;
and son-in-law, Randy Weekly.

The family would like to thank the Villages at Marion for the loving care given to Ginger over the past few
years.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church,
Monti, Iowa, with Rev. Jim Brokman officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church Hall, in
Monti, Iowa. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment: St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery – Monti, Iowa
