Winter Storm Transitioning to Blizzard Friday Night

The second major winter storm of the season – and of the week – is upon us.

The National Weather Service is predicting at least 8 to 12 inches of snow before the white stuff tapers off this evening – but the big story this time around is the strong winds that will follow the snow.

Wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected tonight, leading to blowing and drifting snow and whiteout conditions. Because of that, the National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for Delaware County starting at 5 pm, with the surrounding area also under Blizzard Warnings as well.

The DOT says travel is already not advised across eastern Iowa, including the major highways – and conditions are expected to become more dangerous tonight.

Crews have been trying to clear and treat roads the best they can, but Bieber says it will become more difficult as the day goes on

With the strong winds moving in tonight, power outages may be an issue. If that’s the case and residents need shelter, Bieber says plans are being put into place.

Travel is only recommended in case of an emergency – but even then, authorities recommend you call 911 and emergency crews will come to you.

The winter storm is expected to move out of eastern Iowa by Saturday afternoon, with the Blizzard Warning in effect until noon tomorrow.

Another winter storm is making its way into eastern Iowa.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, with impacts expected late Thursday night through Saturday morning.

Snowfall totals have been upgraded to at least 8 to 12″ across the KMCH listening area for Friday’s winter storm, with Delaware County and points north & east in that 12″ or more range. A glaze of ice is also likely.

Blizzard conditions are likely Friday night into early Saturday, with winds gusting up to 50 mph and blowing snow/whiteouts. A Blizzard Warning has been issued for Buchanan, Linn and Jones counties starting at 5 pm Friday.

Travel will be VERY dangerous. Please take this storm seriously – make alternate plans and stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

The coldest air of the season so far will follow this storm system – with highs struggling to reach above zero on Sunday and Monday.
