Semi Overturns in Buchanan County Creek, Cows Killed

A semi overturned in a Buchanan County creek early Friday, killing at least a dozen cows.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened shortly before 3 am on I-380 near the 50 mile marker.

According to the investigation, a semi driven by Delbert Miller of Stacyville was traveling northbound on I-380 when Miller apparently fell asleep behind the wheel. He lost control of the semi, entered the median, crashed through a guardrail and struck a cement bridge rail. The semi then overturned, went over the bridge rail and into Lime Creek below.

Miller was not hurt.

The semi’s cattle trailer was loaded with about 60 cows. Authorities say about twelve to fifteen cows were killed in the crash or died after the accident.

A second accident occurred when a pickup truck struck some debris in the roadway immediately after the initial accident took place.

The roadway was reduced to one lane for several hours while the investigation and clean-up recovery took place.
