LIHEAP Offering Help with Paying Heating Bills

Today’s cold weather is a reminder that winter isn’t gone just yet.

And while our thermostats may not have been turned up too high these last few months, there are still plenty of Iowans who are struggling to pay their heating bills.

There is help available through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program known as LIHEAP – a federally-funded program designed to assist low-income families meet the cost of home heating by providing a one-time payment to the heating utility provider.

Individuals meeting at (or below) 200% of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible to apply for LIHEAP facilitated through the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program in nine eastern Iowa counties. Locally, those counties include Delaware, Dubuque, Linn and Jones.

Homeowners and renters living within these counties can apply for assistance online at hacap.org/energy through April 30th. Applications can also be downloaded and submitted by mail to HACAP Energy Assistance at PO Box 490, Hiawatha, IA 52233 or by email to [email protected].

You can find more information about LIHEAP online at hacap.org/energy.
