City of West Union Hopes to Recover $60,000 Lost in Cyber Scam

The City of West Union has lost thousands of dollars in a cyber scam.

City officials say during the week of April 22nd, the City discovered it had fallen victim to a cyber scam related to an invoice that had been emailed from what appeared to be a legitimate vendor. The cyber criminals got away with over $60,000.

The City of West Union has reported this scam to its insurance company, with hopes to recover some of these funds through an insurance claim. The City is also looking into the timeline of events, its processes and procedures for payment of vendor invoices submitted by email. 

The City has also worked with an Information Technology vendor to ensure that its email system and internal financial software have not been compromised.
