Strawberry Point Felon Sentenced for Possessing Firearm

A Strawberry Point felon who was found in a park after hours with a sawed-off shotgun was sentenced to more than five years in federal prison on Friday.

56-year old Scott Wesley Timmerman received the prison term after pleading guilty in November to one count of possession of a short-barreled shotgun as a previously convicted felon.

In a plea agreement, Timmerman admitted he possessed a short-barreled Winchester shotgun when officers found him in a park after hours. The firearm was not registered to him in the federal registry. Timmerman also had two prior felony convictions in Arizona.

Timmerman was sentenced in Cedar Rapids to 70 months in prison and fined $500. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Timmerman is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
