Independence Firefighters Dispatched to Another Vehicle Fire Along Highway 20

Firefighters were dispatched to another car fire on Highway 20 in Buchanan County over the weekend.

The Independence Fire Department says they were called to Highway 20’s westbound lanes near mile marker 254 around 1 pm on Sunday. While en route, the Winthrop Fire Department was called for mutual aid with water.

On the scene, crews found a Ford Explorer with heavy fire and smoke coming from the vehicle. Crews were able to get a quick knockdown on the fire and then directed their attention to the fuel fire coming from the bottom of the vehicle. Crews used foam to control the gas fire and then finished extinguishing any hot spots.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle safely with no injuries.

The westbound lane of Highway 20 was shut down for about one hour during the incident.

It was the second vehicle fire in that area in the past week. Last Wednesday, Independence Fire was called to Highway 20 in the area of mile marker 256. The driver of that car escaped with minor injuries.
