Enhanced to Moderate Risk of Severe Weather on Tuesday

Tuesday brings a strong threat for severe weather across eastern Iowa.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Eastern Iowa and the entire tri-state area under an Enhanced Level 3 out of 5 risk, with numerous thunderstorms forecasted Tuesday afternoon and evening. On Monday afternoon, the Storm Prediction Center upgraded the southeast corners of Jones and Linn counties to a Moderate Level 4 out of 5 risk, with widespread severe storms likely.

The National Weather Service says three rounds of storms are likely;

  • Round One from 7 to 11 am, along and north of Highway 30
  • Round Two from 1 to 5 pm, along and north of I-80
  • Round Three from 6 to 11 pm, area-wide moving in from the west

The round on Tuesday evening is expected to bring the strongest winds and highest risk for tornadoes. Damaging winds up to 80 miles per hour, large hail and several tornadoes are possible with Tuesday’s storms.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also possible Monday afternoon and again overnight tonight. Isolated severe storms may occur.

Forecasters encourage you to adjust your plans for Tuesday, review your communication plan with your family and know where to evacuate and/or get to safety from wherever you are.
