Severe Storm Threat for Monday Afternoon/Evening

Severe storms are likely as we head into Monday afternoon and evening.

The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting an Enhanced risk, level 3 of 5, this afternoon and evening. Damaging winds are the primary threat during the afternoon and evening, with tornadoes, large hail, and torrential rainfall are also possible.

The National Weather Service says storms are expected to develop in very unstable atmosphere today as they approach eastern Iowa this afternoon. Supercell thunderstorms with tornadoes, would initially be most likely in areas north of Interstate 80 this afternoon and early evening, followed by a damaging wind producing line of storms, moving from west to east towards early evening. Wind gusts over 75 mph are possible with storms later today, and storms could move east as fast as 60 mph.

Later in the evening, storms will become widespread and sink south through Missouri and central Illinois, and heavy rain will become the primary threat.
