Local Heroes Honored for Helping During Manchester Accident

Three local heroes who helped during an accident in Manchester earlier this year have been honored.
Delaware County Emergency Management presented the Delaware County Lifesaving Award to Josh Heffernen on Monday night. Manchester Fire Department medical officer Matt Wieser nominated Heffernen, a fellow firefighter, for the award.
Authorities says on the night of May 20th, a child on a bicycle was hit by a car at the Manchester intersection of New and Liberty Street. Josh Heffernen was in his driveway and witnessed the accident. He ran over and checked on the child, who was later identified as Hunter Goodman. Hunter was seriously injured, unresponsive and not breathing. He was first taken to Regional Medical Center and then later transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Heffernen initiated CPR and continued with those life-saving efforts until other first responders arrived. Emergency Management Coordinator Mandy Bieber says Heffernen’s courage and quick thinking to initiate CPR gave Hunter a chance of surviving.
Melissa Hauschild and Heather Munson also helped at the scene. To honor their efforts, Manchester Mayor Connie Behnken presented Hauschild, Munson and Heffernen with the City of Manchester’s Good Samaritan Award.
