Linn County Inmate Dies in Custody

A Linn County inmate died while in custody on Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release issued by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Linn County Correctional Center discovered a male inmate in a cellblock who was unconscious and unresponsive, lying in his cell.
A medical emergency was declared over the Correctional Center radios, with correctional center nurses and additional staff responding to the cellblock. When they arrived, they discovered that the inmate was pulseless and breathless – so staff began CPR and connected him to an AED. Additional medical support arrived from the Linn County Sheriff’s Rescue 57 and Area Ambulance Service. The inmate was later pronounced dead.
The inmate, who had been in custody since December 7th, had an extensive medical history and was serving time on several charges. His name is being withheld until family has been notified.
The County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to help determine the inmate’s cause of death. The death has been reported to the State Jail Inspector, with the incident under investigation.
