Edgewood Woman Sentenced for Fatal UTV Crash Released on Bond

An Edgewood woman who was recently sentenced for her role in a fatal UTV crash has been released on bond.

Hanna Meese was sentenced to ten years in prison in Delaware County District Court last month after pleading guilty to Homicide or Serious Injury by Vehicle, a Class C felony.

Authorities say Meese was driving a UTV on May 2nd, 2021 on Woods Edge Drive when she lost control on a curve. Both she and her passenger, Jordan Cabalka of Edgewood, were ejected. Cabalka died at the scene. Meese suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Delaware County Attorney John Bernau says all crimes less than a Class A felony get an appeal bond which, if posted, allows the Defendant to be released pending a decision on their appeal. Bernau says in this case, the Judge set a $50,000 cash appeal bond and the cash was posted once her appeal was filed earlier this month – so Meese is released from custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections until her appeal goes through the appellate system.
