Burn Bans in Effect Across Northeast Iowa

Burn bans are currently in effect for several counties in northeast Iowa.

Delaware County was placed under a burn ban on Thursday afternoon – that will remain in effect until further notice. Dubuque, Buchanan and Clayton counties are also under burn bans at this time.

The burn ban means open burning is prohibited. While some outdoor burning is still allowed under the Delaware County burn ban – such as grilling, outdoor fireplaces and burning trash in certain incinerators or trash burners – Delaware County Emergency Management says ALL outdoor burning is strongly discouraged at this time.

The National Weather Service is also encouraging everyone to use caution when using outdoor machinery and to avoid carelessly discarding cigarettes.

The recent mild, dry weather – combined with gusty winds – has led to an increased risk of fires spreading out of control.

Area fire departments have responded to several out-of-control grass fires this week – at least four fires were reported in the Delaware County area on Thursday afternoon. That’s rare for winter – Manchester Fire Chief Randy Rattenborg says his department normally doesn’t see any grass fires this time of year.

As of Friday afternoon, a total of ten counties across the state – all located in northeast Iowa – were under a burn ban. You can stay up to date with which counties are included by checking the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s website at dps.iowa.gov.
