Law Enforcement Eyeing Drunk Drivers Over St. Patrick’s Holiday

Law enforcement will be out on the roads over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday looking for impaired drivers.
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to remind drivers: Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. This special traffic enforcement program kicks off today and runs through March 21st.
St. Patrick’s Day is one of our nation’s most popular holidays, celebrated with festivals, parades, and parties. These celebrations frequently feature themed cocktails and green pints – and the amount of alcohol consumed is higher than average. Last March, 26 people died in traffic crashes on Iowa roads – 38 percent of those involved impairment. Through the Decide to Ride program, Doll Distributing is offering a $10 Uber voucher to encourage Iowans to plan ahead and make safe choices.
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is also reminding drivers to watch for pedestrians. If you’re on foot, be sure to cross streets in well-lit areas, use the crosswalks and be alert.
