MV Student Wins Legion’s State Flag Essay Contest

A Maquoketa Valley student has won the American Legion’s state flag essay contest.
Anna Zumbach, the daughter of Jennifer and David Zumbach, won the honor last Saturday after first winning on the local and district levels.
Every year, the American Legion of Iowa hosts a flag essay contest open to all 5th grade students. Carpenter Diesch White Post #436 of Earlville co-sponsors students in the Maquoketa Valley School District, with the post choosing Anna as this year’s local winner.
From there, Anna’s essay was selected as the best essay in the fourth district, which consists of all the counties from Delaware and Buchanan up north to the Minnesota border.
Her essay then advanced to compete against the winners of the nine districts in Iowa. Anna was invited to read her essay to the participants at the Fourth District Spring Conference in Independence on Saturday – and while there, she was informed her essay was selected as the best in the state of Iowa.
Listen here to Anna reading her essay:
Anna says it means a lot to her that her essay was chosen as the best in the state.
Congratulations Anna! The Earlville Legion sends their congratulations to Anna and her parents. Commander Loras Mensen says they also need to acknowledge the quality of teachers in the Maquoketa Valley school system. Essays are judged on content and grammar – and Mensen says selecting an essay to send on, even at the local post level, could come down to correct grammar and spelling, so the quality of essays from the students are very good.
