Severe Weather Possible Across Iowa Later Monday

National Weather Service meteorologist Rod Donavon says severe thunderstorms are possible across a wide section of the state later Monday afternoon into Monday night.
In their latest update early Monday afternoon, forecasters say scattered storms are possible tonight as a cold front moves through the region, with the most likely timing between 8 pm and 2 am. There is a LOW chance that the “CAP” (a layer of warm air aloft) breaks this afternoon or evening. If this happens, any storms that develop would likely become severe. However, despite the low confidence in storm coverage, it should be noted that any storm that does develop could produce damaging winds, large hail greater than two inches in diameter and tornadoes (some strong).
If it seems like we’ve been having a lot of severe weather in recent weeks, Donavon says you’re not imagining things.
Iowa’s forecast also calls for broad temperature swings, with highs in the 70s and 80s likely for most of the state today, while the cold front arriving tonight should knock highs into the 60s tomorrow.
