New Headquarters Under Construction for Linn Co. Secondary Road Department

The Linn County Secondary Road Department is getting new headquarters.

The new 75,000 square foot building is currently under construction at the southwest corner of County Home Road and Highway 13 in Marion, across the highway from the current engineering office.

Benefits of the new building include:

  • A modern facility that brings together staff from the engineering and administrative offices, fleet maintenance, construction crew, and roadside operations under one roof
  • Geothermal heating and cooling, to reduce energy use and lower utility costs
  • An overhead crane in the maintenance shop to improve safety for the mechanics when lifting heavy equipment such as engines
  • An indoor wash bay with underbody reach to effectively remove salt and sand from trucks, plows, and other equipment during winter
  • Indoor storage for all vehicles and equipment to protect them from the weather and extend their service life

The contract cost of the facility with Larson Construction is $15.7 million, with an architect fee of 6.75% of the final construction cost. Funding sources include the American Rescue Plan Act, FEMA reimbursement from 2020 derecho damage, Local Option Sales Tax, capital project funds, and the sale of the current engineering building. Construction began this spring and the project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2026.

An outdoor beam signing and hoisting ceremony will take place on Friday at 2:30 pm at 1944 County Home Road, with the public welcome to attend.
