KMCH SPORTS: Boys State Golf and Girls Softball opens up today

BY JON SWISHER – SPORTS DIRECTOR:

The State Boys Golf Tournament starts up this morning with 10:30am tee times.

In Class 3A, held at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. West Delaware, led by Coy Peyton, Griffin Lott, Aidan Zirtzman and Colson Mersch, has been playing well and should be a contender for the title. The Hawks are ranked 2nd in the 3A field, trailing only MOC-Floyd Valley after not making state last season.  Independence could run with the leaders as the Mustangs have a strong 1-2 combination in Ethan Cahalan who was a second-team all-state performer last season and Dawson Fuelling who tied for ninth at state last year.

In Class 1A, at the South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo. North Linn is in for the first time in school history. The Lynx have had a surprisingly good season, finishing first or second in every meet. The team is full of seniors and  multisport performers. Individually, Starmont sophomore Sawyer Schlee and Central City senior Kaleb Walker.

In Class 2A at Gates Park in Waterloo. Individually, Beckman Catholic sophomore Jake Wegman.
