97% of Iowa’s Corn Crop Emerged from Ground

At 97-percent, nearly all of Iowa’s corn crop has emerged from the ground.

This week’s Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA says that’s right on track with the five-year average – and ahead of last year’s pace.

Corn condition is rated mostly good at 63-percent, with 21-percent rated excellent. Meanwhile, soybean condition is rated 62-percent good and 18–percent excellent. Ninety-three percent of soybeans have emerged – one week ahead of last year and two days ahead of normal.

Iowa’s oat crop is rated 65-percent good, with 69-percent headed and 19-percent turning color. Eighty-eight percent of the state’s first cutting of alfalfa hay has been completed, with the second cutting reaching 16-percent complete. Hay condition is rated 82-percent good to excellent.

Ag Secretary Mike Naig says forecasts are showing warmer-than-normal temperatures and continued chances of storms and widespread showers as we head into this week.
