Iowa Crop Progress Report

After a wild weather week of tornadoes, hail, wind, torrential rainfall and flash flooding – there is some good news.

The rainfall is improving drought conditions and helping the corn during tasseling and pollination – that’s according to Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig.

This week’s Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA on Monday says corn silking has reached 36 percent – a day ahead of normal. Five percent of Iowa’s corn reached the dough stage. Corn condition is rated mostly good at 58 percent and 27 percent excellent.

Soybeans blooming has reached 54 percent – equal to the five-year average. Eighteen percent of soybeans were setting pods – three days ahead of the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 59 percent good and 20 percent excellent.

Ninety-six percent of Iowa’s oat crop was headed and 71 percent of oats were turning color. Oats harvested for grain reached 19 percent complete. Oat condition is rated mostly good at 71 percent good

The State’s second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 66 percent complete, while 7 percent of the third cutting was completed. Hay condition is rated 83 percent good to excellent.
