Firefighter Injured in Buchanan County Fire

A firefighter was injured in a Buchanan County house fire on Wednesday morning.

The Independence Fire Department says they were dispatched to the 2100 block of 215th Street.

Fire Chief Blake Hayward says the fire started in the attic area. Upon arriving, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the roof. Crews initiated an offensive fire attack on the main level, as well as ventilation operations from the roof area. Due to the size of the structure and rural location, additional support was requested to assist with firefighting operations.

Mutual aid was provided by the Winthrop, Hazleton, and Jesup Fire Departments, along with AMR Ambulance and Buchanan County Sheriff’s deputies and dispatch.

One firefighter sustained injuries during firefighting efforts and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The American Red Cross and Buchanan County Salvation Army responded to assist the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
