Iowa Crop Progress & Condition Report

Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig says farmers across the state enjoyed a welcomed break from the rain last week.
This week’s Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA on Monday says corn condition is rated 56-percent good and 28-percent excellent, with soybeans rated 59-percent good and 20-percent excellent.
Corn in the dough stage reached 88-percent complete – one day behind last year and three days behind normal. Forty-five percent of the state’s corn has reached the dent stage. Meanwhile, ninety-percent of Iowa’s soybeans are setting pods – a day ahead of last year, but four days behind normal. And soybeans coloring has reached eight percent. At 97-percent, almost all of Iowa’s oat for grain crop has been harvested. And the third cutting of alfalfa hay is 78-percent complete.
Reports are noting increasing levels of disease in field crops.
Secretary Naig says as we finish out August, the forecast is calling for more of the same cooler, drier weather this week. And looking ahead, initial outlooks are pointing toward a potentially warmer September as harvest approaches.
